{"id":139,"date":"2020-06-30T12:00:58","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T16:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/?page_id=139"},"modified":"2026-09-09T15:53:37","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T19:53:37","slug":"cpt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment\/cpt\/","title":{"rendered":"CPT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>CPT may include an internship, practicum, clinical placement, fieldwork, cooperative education, or other required practical training experience that is directly related to the student\u2019s major area of study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>CPT must be required for degree completion and meet applicable University, academic, and F-1 regulatory requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Application Process for CPT<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Verify Your Eligibility<\/strong> \u2014 Confirm that you meet CPT requirements.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Secure Your Training Opportunity<\/strong> \u2014 Obtain a qualifying training offer.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Register for the Required Course<\/strong> \u2014 Enroll in the required course and academic credit.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Submit Your CPT Request<\/strong> \u2014 Apply through International Services before the last day to add a course.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Complete the Review Process<\/strong> \u2014 Your academic department and International Services will review your request.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Receive Your CPT I-20<\/strong> \u2014 Review your updated I-20 and CPT authorization.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Begin Your CPT<\/strong> \u2014 Start your training only on or after the authorized CPT start date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>You must receive your CPT-authorized Form I-20 before beginning employment. CPT authorization cannot be backdated.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility for CPT<\/h2>\n<p>An F-1 student may be eligible for CPT when:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The training is an integral and required part of the established curriculum.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The training is required for students in the applicable curriculum.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The training is directly related to the student\u2019s major area of study.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The student is enrolled in the required course and receives academic credit during the applicable term, consistent with the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/policies\/credit-hour-policy\/\">Credit Hour Policy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The student is maintaining valid F-1 status and making normal academic progress.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The student has completed at least one full academic year of lawful full-time study, unless an exception applies.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The training meets applicable University, academic and F-1 requirements.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The employer and training opportunity meet established Federal requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CPT is not available for training that is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Undertaken solely for professional experience or r\u00e9sum\u00e9 building<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Based on a minor or general graduation requirement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Students seeking off-campus employment for professional experience that is not an integral part of their curriculum should explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment\/pre-completion-opt\/\">Pre-Completion OPT<\/a>, when eligible.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>When to Apply for CPT<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Earliest to Apply<\/strong><span>: Once registered for the applicable CPT course<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Latest to Apply<\/strong><span>: By the last day to add the required course<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>DSO Review Time<\/strong><span>: Allow at least 1\u20132 weeks for departmental and DSO review.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Training Start<\/strong><span>: Only after receiving the CPT-authorized Form I-20<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span>Important: Do not begin employment until you have received your CPT-authorized Form I-20.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CPT may include an internship, practicum, clinical placement, fieldwork, cooperative education, or other required practical training experience that is directly related to the student\u2019s major area of study.
