{"id":1504,"date":"2022-05-13T12:09:10","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T16:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment-for-international-students\/opt\/pre-completion-2\/"},"modified":"2026-09-09T13:47:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T17:47:56","slug":"post-completion-opt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment\/post-completion-opt\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-Completion OPT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) may be authorized for up to 12 months per educational level for employment that is directly related to the student\u2019s major area of study.<\/p>\n<h2>Application Process for Post-Completion OPT<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Check Your Eligibility<\/strong> \u2014 Confirm you meet the requirements<\/li>\n<li><strong>Request Your DSO-Endorsed I-20<\/strong> \u2014 Submit your request to International Services<\/li>\n<li><strong>Receive Your OPT-Endorsed Form I-20<\/strong> \u2014 Wait for new OPT I-20<\/li>\n<li><strong>File Form I-765 With USCIS<\/strong> \u2014 Submit your application to USCIS<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Depending on your travel history and your Admit Until Date, you may also be required to submit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-539, Application to Extend\/Change Nonimmigrant Status<\/a>, with USCIS.<\/p>\n<h3>Important OPT Rules<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Job Offer Not Required<\/strong><span> \u2014 A job offer is not required to apply for OPT<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Full-Time CPT Limit <\/strong><span>\u2014 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility at that educational level<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Maintain Qualifying Employment<\/strong><span> \u2014 Students must maintain qualifying employment throughout authorized OPT<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>90-Day Unemployment Limit <\/strong><span>\u2014 Students may not exceed 90 cumulative days of unemployment during post-completion OPT<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Applications Filed Before March 18, 2027<\/h3>\n<p>A special transition provision applies to certain F-1 students applying for post-completion OPT prior to March 18, 2027.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Without Travel After September 15, 2026:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-765: Employment Authorization<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>With Travel and Re-entry After September 15, 2026:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-765: Employment Authorization<\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-539: Extension of Stay<\/a>, as applicable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OPT Applications Filed After March 18, 2027:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-765: Employment Authorization<\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-539: Extension of Stay<\/a>, as applicable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>EOS requirements may depend on your individual immigration circumstances. Consult with International Services before filing to determine which applications are required.<\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility for Post-Completion OPT<\/h2>\n<p>An F-1 student may be eligible for post-completion OPT if the student:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has been enrolled full-time for at least one full academic year with the current SEVIS ID.<\/li>\n<li>Has (or is) completing a bachelor&#8217;s, master&#8217;s, or doctoral degree.<\/li>\n<li>Has not exhausted available OPT eligibility at the current educational level.<\/li>\n<li>Has not been authorized for 12 months or more of full-time CPT.<\/li>\n<li>Obtains a DSO recommendation in SEVIS and new Form I-20 with an OPT-endorsement.<\/li>\n<li>Properly files <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-765<\/a> with USCIS within the required filing period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to File for Post-Completion OPT<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Earliest USCIS Filing Date:<\/strong> 90 days before your program end date<\/li>\n<li><strong>DSO Endorsement Deadline: <\/strong>At least 2 weeks prior to last filing date<\/li>\n<li><strong>Requested Start Date: <\/strong>Must fall within the applicable grace period following program completion<\/li>\n<li><strong>USCIS Receipt Date: <\/strong>USCIS must receive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-765<\/a> within 30 days of the DSO\u2019s OPT recommendation in SEVIS<\/li>\n<li><strong>Latest USCIS Filing Date: <\/strong>Before your Admit Until Date (AUD)<\/li>\n<li><strong>USCIS Processing Time: <\/strong>4+ months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Important: You must meet both the USCIS filing deadline and the 30-day deadline following your DSO\u2019s OPT recommendation.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) may be authorized for up to 12 months per educational level for employment that is directly related to the student\u2019s major area of study.
