{"id":1509,"date":"2022-05-13T12:16:13","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T16:16:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment-for-international-students\/opt\/post-completion-2\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T12:34:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T16:34:52","slug":"stem-opt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment\/stem-opt\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM OPT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eligible F-1 students who have earned a degree in an approved STEM field, are currently participating in post-completion OPT, and are employed in a paid position directly related to their field of study with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-verify.gov\/\">E-Verify<\/a> employer may apply for a 24-month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/working-in-the-united-states\/students-and-exchange-visitors\/optional-practical-training-extension-for-stem-students-stem-opt\">STEM OPT Extension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>When to Apply<\/h2>\n<p>You may submit your STEM OPT application to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Up to 90 days<\/strong> before your current OPT Employment Authorization Document (EAD) expires, and<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Within 60 days<\/strong> of the date your Designated School Official (DSO) enters the STEM OPT recommendation into your SEVIS record<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> You must apply while your OPT is still active. Applications submitted during the 60-day grace period following OPT expiration are not permitted.<\/p>\n<h2>Processing Times<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/egov.uscis.gov\/processing-times\/\">Standard Processing<\/a>: Approximately 4 months or more<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LnVzY2lzLmdvdi9pLTkwNyIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMzA2MTIuNzgxMjE5NjEifQ.HI9PV3PoVGu8z6tdSkGy87nWCzJtsJYRuuT_aVy1_4U\/s\/524657574\/br\/204768122362-l\">Premium Processing<\/a>: 30 business days (additional fee required)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your STEM OPT application is <strong>filed on time<\/strong>, you may continue working for u<strong>p to 180 days<\/strong> beyond the expiration of your post-completion OPT EAD while your application is pending.<\/p>\n<p>If your application remains pending beyond the 180-day extension period, you must stop working until it is approved.<\/p>\n<h2>STEM OPT Eligibility<\/h2>\n<p>To qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT Extension, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Be currently authorized for and actively participating in post-completion OPT<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Have earned a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher in an eligible STEM field from an accredited, SEVP-certified school<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Be employed in a paid position that:\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Is directly related to your field of study<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Requires a minimum of 20 hours per week<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Is with an employer enrolled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-verify.gov\/\">E-Verify<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Work for an employer that meets all STEM OPT Employer Requirements and Responsibilities<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Submit a completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/doclib\/sevis\/pdf\/i983.pdf\">Form I-983<\/a> (Training Plan for STEM OPT Students) and receive:\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">DSO review and approval<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">A new Form I-20 with the STEM OPT recommendation noted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">File <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\">Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization<\/a>, with USCIS:\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Within required deadlines<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">With the appropriate fee and all required supporting documentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eligible F-1 students who have earned a degree in an approved STEM field, are currently participating in post-completion OPT, and are employed in a paid position directly related to their field of study with an E-Verify employer may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT Extension.
