{"id":255,"date":"2020-07-08T14:22:20","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T18:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment-and-social-security-information\/economic-hardship-employment\/"},"modified":"2025-03-25T12:50:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T16:50:44","slug":"economic-hardship-employment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment\/economic-hardship-employment\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic Hardship Employment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Severe Economic Hardship Employment must be recommended by the Designated School Official and authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).<\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility Criteria<\/h2>\n<p>You are eligible to apply for employment based on severe economic hardship if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have been in valid F-1 status for at least one academic year;<\/li>\n<li>You are experiencing economic hardship based on unforeseen circumstances beyond your control that arose after you obtained F-1 status;<\/li>\n<li>You are currently in good academic standing and are carrying a full course load;<\/li>\n<li>Employment opportunities on campus are unavailable or insufficient;<\/li>\n<li>Acceptance of employment will not interfere with your full-time study.<\/li>\n<li>The student has received an endorsement from their DSO for employment as a result of severe economic hardship and received a new Form I-20.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Unforeseen Circumstances<\/h2>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Loss of financial aid or on-campus employment resulting from circumstances beyond the student\u2019s control.<\/li>\n<li>Substantial fluctuations in the exchange rate or value of the student&#8217;s home country\u2019s currency.<\/li>\n<li>Inordinate increases in tuition or living costs.<\/li>\n<li>Unexpected changes in the financial condition of the student\u2019s financial sponsor.<\/li>\n<li>Unexpected medical bills\u00a0not covered by insurance.<\/li>\n<li>Other substantial and unexpected expenses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Requesting the DSO Endorsement<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Submit the Severe Economic Hardship Request via the International Services Portal, uploading all required documents, including:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Unofficial Transcript:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/registrar\/transcripts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/registrar\/transcripts\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1743003703676000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0HgI5FxIgu8-_YX588jAYa\">Ways to Order Your Transcript<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Requested Dates of Employment:<\/strong> Start and End Date<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Signed Student Statement:<\/strong> Write and sign a statement that describes the unforeseen circumstances causing your economic hardship. Be detailed about the nature of the situation (e.g., medical issues, family emergencies, currency devaluation, etc.).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Evidence of Financial Hardship:<\/strong> Documentation to substantiate your financial hardship. Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Loss of Employment for financial sponsors.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Medical bills or proof of high medical costs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Proof of currency devaluation or other financial crises impacting your income or savings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Any other relevant documents showing your need for financial support.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Severe Economic Hardship Employment must be recommended by the Designated School Official and authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
