If you cannot complete your academic program by the program end date listed on your Form I-20, you may be eligible to request a program extension through the International Services Portal.<\/p>\n<p>Federal regulations permit a Designated School Official (DSO) to authorize a program extension when the student has continuously maintained valid F-1 status and the delay in completion is due to compelling academic or documented medical circumstances, as permitted by federal regulations.<\/p>\n<p><em>You must request an extension through the International Services Portal and obtain approval from your Designated School Official (DSO) before your current Form I-20 program end date. Extensions are not automatic and are subject to eligibility requirements.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Extension Application Process<\/h2>\n<p>Adelphi students can request an extension of their Form I-20 if they need additional time to complete their academic program.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Confirm Your Eligibility <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Submit Your Request <\/strong>(before the deadline)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide Supporting Documentation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Receive Your Updated Form I-20<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Eligibility to Extend F-1 Status<\/h2>\n<p>To qualify for a program extension, you must:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Have continuously maintained valid F-1 status through the period of enrollment.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Be making normal academic progress toward completing your degree.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Have a compelling academic or documented medical reason for the delay.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Obtain your academic advisor\u2019s recommendation.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Provide updated financial documentation demonstrating sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for the extension period.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Qualifying reasons may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">A change in major or research topic.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Unexpected research difficulties or obstacles.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">A documented medical condition.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Other compelling academic circumstances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Reasons that do not qualify for program extension: <\/strong>Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable grounds for an extension under federal regulations.
