path to Adelphi might be considered nontraditional. Before arriving as a member of the faculty at the School of Social Work in 1984—a role he would hold for the next four decades—he had already accumulated a remarkable range of professional experiences. He served as a first lieutenant and chaplain with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, which brought him face-to-face with the psychological costs of stress, crisis and trauma. That service instilled in him a practical understanding that led him to pursue psychoanalytic training at the , where he earned his Master of Social Work degree and became a licensed social worker.

“After becoming a social worker, I ran into a priest at a party who said I should try teaching as he did,” said Dr. Belson. “I enjoyed teaching too. So I became a DSW and a professor at Adelphi, and I love it. I realized that teaching is my specialty. I called that priest every year until he passed away to thank him.”

The Art of Teaching

In 2003–2004, Dr. Belson received Ƶ’s Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence. This recognition was inspired by his vibrant teaching style that balanced intellectual seriousness with humor. He once delivered a keynote titled “Intensity, Chaos, Humor and Redemption: 30 Years of Working With Couples and Families,” a title that gives some indication of his pedagogical approach. He taught students not just how to intervene, but how to be present, how to listen for what isn’t said and be comfortable amid complexity.

Dr. Belson’s retirement does not mark an ending so much as a consolidation—a life’s work that will continue through the practitioners he trained, the papers he wrote and the questions he taught an entire generation to ask. The Ƶ School of Social Work will miss him, but the field he served is richer for everything he gave.

Ƶ has surged to the number-one spot among all Long Island institutions in the newly released . The Ƶ Robert B. Willumstad School of Business outpaced its peers with a 17-point jump from No. 102 in 2025 to No. 85 this year—marking the single largest improvement of any college or university on the list.

A dramatic rise in Career Outcomes (from No. 103 to No. 79) and Admissions Standards (No. 97 to No. 83) helped fuel the rankings surge this year. Poets&Quants specifically noted the impact of the School’s Willumstad Winning Edge program, a signature two-course sequence that pairs every student with both faculty and career-readiness advisers. By guaranteeing hands-on professional experiences, Adelphi has helped redefine the undergraduate business experience and deliver industry-ready graduates.

Poets&Quants is the leading independent authority on business school rankings, evaluating hundreds of undergraduate programs across the United States. The ranking uses a total index score, combining surveys of recent alumni (two years postgraduation) and school-reported data. ’s jump of 17 places signals not just incremental progress—it signals transformation.

“While we are extremely proud of this ranking, it is what is behind the ranking that really sets Adelphi apart,” said MaryAnne Hyland, PhD, dean of the Robert. B Willumstad School of Business. “Our commitment to student success is reflected in high alumni satisfaction and strong internship and job placement rates that give our students the competitive edge necessary to thrive in today’s economy. Recent graduates report high overall satisfaction with their Adelphi experience. Our career-readiness program leads to strong internship and job placement, both of which are critical to business students.”

Business Programs Expand to ’s Manhattan Center

Later this spring, Adelphi will expand its award-winning academic programs to its new Midtown Manhattan Center at 529 Fifth Avenue (at 44th Street), offering access to professional growth opportunities and access to major employers. The recently announced that Adelphi is a recipient of the grant to advance health and well-being.

The initiative, The Hudson Valley Geriatric Mental Health Initiative, will be led by the Ƶ School of Social Work and is scheduled to run from January 2026 through December 2026. The effort, which seeks to build capacity among behavioral health providers by enhancing competencies in geriatric mental health, is expected to lead to improved service outcomes and the education of new social workers residing and working in the Hudson Valley.

Adelphi Addresses Long Island and Hudson Valley Mental Health Disparities

Daniel B. This project will allow us to work directly with leaders from diverse sectors to understand and share news of what is already working well and where to find opportunities for improved practices and policies.”

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation awarded $16 million to 32 organizations, including Ƶ. The funding is part of more than $142 million for programs across 399 grants designed to support people in need in 2026.

“At a time when many families are being asked to do more with less, the foundation remains focused on showing up in tangible ways for people across New York,” Jennifer Balbach, finance committee chair of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation board, said in the organization’s news release. “These investments prioritize everyday stability—from access to nutritious food and safe housing to mental health care—and reflect our belief that long-term community well-being starts with practical, people-centered support.”

About the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of vulnerable communities, eliminate barriers to care, and bridge gaps in health services.
