From classrooms on campus to the upper floors of the World Trade Center, the lives of Adelphi students, faculty, alumni and leadership were irrevocably intersected by catastrophe. Twenty-five years later, their stories reveal how a single morning continues to echo across generations, offering a timeless blueprint of resilience, community and courage.

“Time Seemed to Stand Still”: President Michael Balboni鈥檚 Classroom Recollections

For 茄子视频 President Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD, September 11, 2001, began in a classroom. Then a New York state senator, he was serving as an adjunct faculty member, teaching a political science class on campus, when he received a phone call with the unbelievable news.

鈥淭ime seemed to stand still,鈥 President Balboni recalled in a message sent to the Adelphi community on the eve of the 25th anniversary. 鈥淚n that classroom, fear, confusion and grief washed over us, but so did a profound sense of shared humanity.鈥

That shared ordeal forged an indelible bond between President Balboni and his students鈥攐ne he carries with him to this day. In the painful weeks that followed, he attended dozens of memorial services for constituents, neighbors and friends. Yet amid immeasurable sorrow, he discovered enduring hope in the quiet resilience of ordinary people鈥攖hose who chose, day after day, to board trains back into a city with a smoldering skyline, displaying their own powerful brand of bravery.

For current Adelphi students who were too young to remember or not yet born, President Balboni emphasizes that 9/11 remains an active lesson in human strength. 鈥淵ou do not need to wear a uniform or rush into a burning building to be brave,鈥 he wrote. 鈥淐ourage is often found in the resolve to keep moving forward, to lend a voice of comfort to those who are grieving, and to show up for your community when it is hardest to do so.鈥

Inside the Tower: Dr. Nicholas Cagliuso鈥檚 Survival and the Lifelong Call to Serve

Headshot of Dr. Cagliuso

Nicholas Cagliuso Sr., PhD, MPH

While news was reaching the Adelphi campus, Nicholas Cagliuso Sr., PhD鈥攏ow an adjunct faculty member in Adelphi鈥檚 鈥攚as at ground zero itself.

Dr. Cagliuso had recently started a job on the 86th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. He arrived that morning at about 8:20. About 25 minutes later, the plane struck the building.

To Dr. Cagliuso, the initial impact felt like an air conditioner blowing out. Soon, however, thick smoke began to roll in. Looking out the window, he saw desks, tables and office chairs falling past the glass. Acting quickly, he used a hammer to break a floor-to-ceiling window to bring crucial oxygen into the smoky room, creating a rush of wind so powerful it nearly tore a door off its hinges.

As Dr. Cagliuso and two co-workers entered the stairwell to begin their descent, his decade of EMT experience and fire service training kicked in: Assess what is happening, then act.

The journey down was treacherous. As the building shifted, stairwell doors jammed, forcing them to find alternate routes past darkened elevator shafts. Along the way, Dr. Cagliuso stopped to assist when Port Authority police called for CPR-trained responders, helping a struggling women down a flight of stairs.

As he neared the mezzanine, the South Tower collapsed, shaking the North Tower violently. Firefighters breached a wall to redirect evacuees to another staircase. Stepping onto the mezzanine level, Dr. Cagliuso spotted two airplane seats lying amidst the debris.

Finally reaching the street, he fled the complex. Approximately 10 minutes later, the North Tower collapsed. He walked across the Brooklyn Bridge to fire headquarters, eventually reuniting with his wife and father.

Looking back, Dr. Cagliuso does not view September 11 as a sudden turn in his life, but as a “crystallizing moment” that reaffirmed his devotion to public service. Today, he brings that lived experience directly into the Adelphi classroom, teaching emergency management students the practical realities behind safety theories. He stresses preparedness, vigilance and the importance of helping others.

“Our Lives Have Changed”: The View From Campus

Back on campus in Garden City, shock quickly turned to a collective effort to comprehend the tragedy.

Just two weeks into her first year at Adelphi, Amanda Barbieri 鈥05 watched the chaos unfolding in Lower Manhattan on a television in her dormitory’s common area. The reality hit close to home for the campus community. Many were terrified because they had family members who worked in or around the Twin Towers.

The personal impact was staggering for young students. 鈥淚t was terrifying because the week before, I had gone up to the observation deck of the Twin Towers,鈥 Barbieri recalled in an interview published this fall on September 10 in USA Today. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 imagine getting out of there once you were in.鈥

Looking back, Barbieri, now a behavioral therapist, noted how profoundly the event shaped her outlook on life. 鈥淎s a kid, I don’t know if I really understood it yet,鈥 she reflected, fighting back tears. 鈥淏ut I know as I’ve gotten older, nothing is ever promised. That was something that was there one minute, and gone the next, along with the people that were in it.鈥

A reproduction of the student newspaper's front page, with the oversized headline "Our Lives Have Changed" and a subhead that reads "Adelphi's faculty and students mourn and unite after national tragedy."

The front page of the September 21, 2001, issue of The Delphian

Just 10 days after the towers fell, The Delphian, Adelphi鈥檚 student newspaper, captured this exact heartbreak and sense of suspended reality across campus.

“Our Lives Have Changed,” read the bold page one headline of The Delphian. “The death toll is expected to reach ‘the thousands.'” An editorial summarized the inescapable reach of the tragedy across the University community: “There may not be a person at 茄子视频 who has not, in one way or another, been affected by this tragedy.”

Community Members Lost

The fears expressed on the pages of The Delphian were realized for many in the Adelphi family.

Among those lost was James Ostrowski 鈥88, who was working as a bond broker on the 104th floor of the North Tower at the Cantor Fitzgerald office. When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building at 8:46 a.m., it hit directly below Cantor鈥檚 offices, severing all stairwells and elevator shafts in the impact zone and cutting off any chance of escape. Ostrowski died alongside 657 of his colleagues, just one day before his ninth wedding anniversary. He was 37 years old and left behind his wife and three young children.

Headshot of Professor Saucedo

Professor of art and art history Christopher Saucedo

Christopher Saucedo, a professor of art and art history who joined Adelphi’s faculty in 2012, lost his brother Gregory, a New York City firefighter, in the attack. Deeply affected by his brother’s death, Professor Saucedo created a series of works honoring him and others who perished that day. The series, Requiem MMI, includes portraits of his brother along with images of the World Trade Center floating on an azure background. Requiem MMI is on view at Adelphi as part of the University’s remembrance on the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Describing the works, Professor Saucedo wrote, 鈥淚 wanted the works to exist outside of time, both before and after September 11, 2001. I needed it to remind me of the event that changed everything and still not make me sad. Mostly I wanted to see that blue sky and hopefully hear the voice of a cherished friend, if only as a distant echo.”

Twenty-five years later, his story, along with those of President Balboni, Dr. Cagliuso, student journalists and those who perished, form an essential tapestry of Adelphi’s history. They serve as a poignant reminder that while 9/11 reshaped our world forever, the spirit of community, service and quiet courage remains unbroken.

茄子视频 has added two highly distinguished leaders in the healthcare field to its board of trustees. Even more noteworthy, both leaders share a similar journey鈥擜chan as a first-generation American and Dowling as an immigrant. That shared background gives them a deeply felt empathy for the experiences of so many Adelphi students today.

Leonard C. Achan 鈥99, a graduate of Adelphi’s nursing program whose connection to the University includes 10 years of service as a trustee and generous support of student scholarships and spiritual life on campus, is a healthcare innovator and executive, philanthropist and artist born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens.

Michael Dowling, who grew up in poverty in Ireland before immigrating to the United States, built Northwell Health into New York state鈥檚 largest employer and the Northeast鈥檚 largest healthcare provider. As CEO of the nonprofit, based in nearby New Hyde Park, New York, he helped develop longtime alliances with Adelphi that provided critical clinical and educational opportunities for our students.

“Both of these leaders have made an incredible impact on our community,鈥 said Adelphi President Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD. “Chair Achan鈥檚 story truly embodies the Adelphi spirit and is a shining example of our strength in producing leaders in nursing, health care and business. And Michael Dowling shares Adelphi鈥檚 deep commitment to the public good. His compassion and dedication to helping others throughout his career are a true reflection of his character.鈥

Leonard C. Achan 鈥99

Trustee Leonard C. Achan 鈥99

Chair Achan鈥檚 connection to Adelphi is rooted in a deep personal commitment to the University鈥檚 mission of transforming lives through education, service and compassionate care. He brings that devotion to his new role as board chair. He succeeds acting chair William Fuessler 鈥79, who now serves as vice chair.

Like many of his fellow Adelphi nursing alumni, Achan began his career at the bedside, first as a medical ICU nurse and than as an adult acute care nurse practitioner, embodying Adelphi鈥檚 core values of care, clinical excellence and service to others. As his leadership expanded into senior executive roles across top-tier institutions鈥攊ncluding Mount Sinai Health System, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Hospital for Special Surgery鈥擟hair Achan consistently championed innovation that enhances patient care. As an entrepreneur, he co-founded and served as chairman of Quality Reviews Inc., a digital health platform used by more than 150 hospitals that elevates the care experience for more than 30 million patients nationwide. Today, he is president and CEO of LiveOnNY, a vital nonprofit dedicated to lifesaving organ donations and supporting donor families, further extending the spirit of public health and empathy nurtured during his student days at Adelphi.

Beyond his professional achievements and his leadership as a trustee, Chair Achan has provided transformational philanthropic support for Adelphi and its students. He has championed opportunity by establishing the Leonard Achan Sr. Endowed Scholarship, honoring his father by supporting students passionate about the arts, nature, the environment and public health. He invested in compassionate care by creating the Zosia 鈥淕igi鈥 Levine Endowed Scholarship for Mental Health鈥攈onoring his wife鈥檚 grandmother, a Holocaust survivor鈥攖o provide needed assistance to future generations of mental health counselors. And this past June, his generous gift supporting spiritual life and the inclusive, community-minded mission of Adelphi鈥檚 Interfaith Center was recognized by the renaming of the center as the Achan Family Interfaith Center.

鈥淥pening that Adelphi acceptance letter was a spark of light,鈥 Chair Achan said in a . 鈥淚 was a first-generation American and an inner city youth in Queens. I never thought I might go to college. Adelphi became a beacon that showed me the way to the future I aspired to.鈥

鈥淏eing a trustee has given me such great perspective,鈥 he continued. 鈥淚 can still reflect back on being a student, so I know our students have dreams too, and I believe they will fulfill those dreams because of their foundation at Adelphi. Through the support of the University, through board governance, through philanthropic support, I have this privilege of helping bring those dreams to life.鈥

Michael Dowling

Michael Dowling, who joined the board in September, brings his legacy of global leadership in healthcare, public policy and crisis management to the University.

As president and CEO of Northwell Health for more than 24 years, he provided the visionary leadership that helped Northwell grow into a clinical, academic and research enterprise with more than 106,000 employees and nearly $25 billion in annual revenue.

Prior to Northwell, Dowling served in the New York state government for 12 years, including seven years as state director of health, education and human services and deputy secretary to former Gov. Mario Cuomo, and later as commissioner of the Department of Social Services. A native of County Limerick, Ireland, he earned his undergraduate degree at University College Cork and his Master of Social Work at Fordham University, where he served as a professor of social policy and assistant dean of the university鈥檚 Graduate School of Social Service and director of the Fordham campus in Westchester County.

He was named a 鈥淭itan鈥 on the TIME100 Health 2025 list and ranked No. 1 on Modern Healthcare鈥檚 list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare in 2022. Dowling is the acclaimed author of several books, including his memoir, , a moving account of his hardscrabble upbringing and the educational journey that helped him transcend it.

鈥淚鈥檓 extraordinarily proud to join the Adelphi board,鈥 Dowling said. “I look forward to lending my insight and expertise to the University and working with President Balboni and my fellow board members to strengthen Adelphi鈥檚 standing as a preeminent institution for healthcare education.鈥

Dowling and Chair Achan both experienced the power of education to transform lives. As trustees, both have the power to extend Adelphi’s ability to make a life-changing impact on new generations of students while also enhancing the University’s leadership in healthcare.

Dowling鈥檚 appointment reinforces the University鈥檚 commitment to aligning its academic programming with the immediate, evolving needs of New York鈥檚 healthcare sector.

鈥淢ichael Dowling knows firsthand what the modern workforce demands,鈥 noted Adelphi President Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD. 鈥淥ur vision is to be Long Island鈥檚 preeminent institution for healthcare education, and Michael鈥檚 guidance will be invaluable as we graduate the next generation of frontline healthcare workers, administrators and mental health professionals.鈥

Adelphi has been named a Best College among National Universities for eight consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report, and for the past three years. One of the largest nursing schools in New York state, the 茄子视频 College of Nursing and Public Health (CNPH) has steadily risen the national rankings in recent years for both its undergraduate and graduate programs. Adelphi鈥檚 CNPH is also the home of its Clinical Education and Simulation Lab (CESiL), the only lab of its kind on Long Island to be accredited by the .

Adelphi鈥檚 Powerhouse Governance Team

Dowling joins Adelphi鈥檚 highly experienced and respected board of trustees, known for its diverse expertise, deep tenure and civic reputation鈥攁dding his global heavyweight status to an already formidable governance team. He joins Leonard C. Achan 鈥99, a fellow healthcare and business leader and CEO of LiveOnNY, who was recently named chair of Adelphi鈥檚 board.

President Balboni鈥檚 background in policy and homeland security, paired with the healthcare dominance of Dowling and Achan, positions Adelphi鈥檚 board as a coalition of New York鈥檚 most experienced, crisis-tested leaders.

鈥淚鈥檓 extraordinarily proud to join the Adelphi board,鈥 said Dowling. 鈥淭he University has a long, proud history of providing students with rewarding career opportunities in healthcare and so many other professions throughout Long Island and the entire metropolitan area. As the longtime CEO at Northwell, where we developed mutually beneficial clinical and educational alliances with Adelphi, I鈥檓 well aware of the many talented nurses, public health professionals, administrators, mental health counselors and other graduates who helped fill vital roles within our health system. I look forward to lending my insight and expertise to the University and working with Mike Balboni and my fellow board members to strengthen Adelphi鈥檚 standing as a preeminent institution for healthcare education.鈥

Dowling鈥檚 appointment follows the recent addition of four new trustees with diverse insights in law, business, real estate, infrastructure and higher education, and underscores Adelphi鈥檚 commitment to utilizing enterprise-level, external leadership to thrive and address the complex challenges of higher education.

Social Impact and Shared Values

Unlike other corporate executives who join university boards, Dowling has a Master of Social Work and began his career as a professor of social policy. While his background mirrors Adelphi鈥檚 dedication to community impact, he is also widely recognized for taking a stand on some of the nation鈥檚 toughest societal issues鈥攆rom gun violence prevention and the youth mental health crisis to caring for an aging population.

鈥淎s seen in his transformative work, Michael shares Adelphi鈥檚 deep commitment to the public good,鈥 President Balboni added. 鈥淗is compassion and dedication to helping others throughout his career are a true reflection of his character.鈥

In addition to his healthcare leadership, Dowling brings higher education and corporate governance experience to Adelphi. He served on the board of trustees of Fordham University for eight years and held board appointments with BankUnited, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the Foreign Policy Association and the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School at University College Dublin.

Dear Adelphi Community,

I am thrilled to share more exciting news regarding the governance and future of 茄子视频. Healthcare visionary and social impact leader Michael Dowling, CEO Emeritus of Northwell Health, has officially joined our Board of Trustees.

Michael鈥檚 remarkable career spans global leadership roles in healthcare, public policy and crisis management. During his more than 24 years as president and CEO, he built Northwell Health into New York鈥檚 largest private employer and the Northeast鈥檚 largest healthcare provider, renowned for its clinical, academic and research excellence. He knows firsthand what the modern workforce demands, and his guidance will be invaluable as Adelphi continues to educate and graduate the next generation of frontline healthcare workers, administrators, and mental health professionals.

My relationship with Michael dates back many years before his time at Northwell, when he served in the New York state government for 12 years. He played a critical role in ensuring New Yorkers received essential services and support as state director of Health, Education and Human Services and deputy secretary to New York Governor Mario Cuomo, and later as commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services.

As seen in his transformative work, Michael shares Adelphi鈥檚 deep commitment to the public good, higher education and community impact. Holding a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Fordham University, he began his career as a professor at Fordham and served as director of its Tarrytown campus. He later became a professor of social policy and assistant dean at the Graduate School of Social Services, and served on Fordham’s board of trustees for eight years. He has consistently taken a bold stand on important societal issues, including gun violence prevention, pandemic resilience, youth mental health and caring for an aging population.

His compassion and dedication to helping others throughout his career are a true reflection of Michael鈥檚 character. From growing up poor as a child in Ireland working on a farm to help support his family, to being an immigrant worker on the docks in Manhattan while in college, Michael embodies the American dream and has a special understanding of the human experience.

Michael joins an already formidable and highly experienced Board of Trustees, including fellow healthcare and business trailblazer Chair Leonard C. Achan 鈥99 (CEO of LiveOnNY). Together, with the rest of our trustees demonstrating expertise across law, business, real estate, marketing, finance, infrastructure and higher education, our board represents a diverse, experienced coalition of leaders dedicated to guiding Adelphi into its next chapter.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Michael Dowling as he joins our university community.

Warm regards,

Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD
President

Dear Adelphi Community,

On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was exactly where many of you will be tomorrow: in an Adelphi classroom.

At the time, I was serving as a New York state senator, but I was also an adjunct faculty member here, teaching a political science course. When I received a call that the planes had hit the World Trade Center, time seemed to stand still. In that classroom, fear, confusion and grief washed over us, but so did a profound sense of shared humanity. We navigated the terrifying news together, and the indelible bond that formed between me and my students that morning is something I carry with me to this day.

In the heartbreaking weeks that followed, the true toll of the tragedy settled over our region. I attended dozens of funerals for constituents, neighbors and friends. The sorrow was immeasurable, yet even in the darkest moments, flashes of profound light emerged. I will never forget standing outside a church during one such funeral procession when the soft, clear voices of young students from a neighboring Catholic school drifted out of their open classroom windows. They were singing 鈥淕od Bless America.鈥 It was a simple, spontaneous offering of comfort that pierced the heavy silence and reminded us of the enduring beauty of the human spirit.

What stood out most to me in the aftermath of 9/11 was not only the monumental heroism of our first responders, but the quiet courage of everyday people. In the days and weeks after the attacks, I visited Long Island Rail Road stations in the early mornings simply to say “thank you” to the commuters. Stepping back onto a train and traveling into a city whose skyline was still smoldering took a special kind of bravery. It was an act of extraordinary determination and refusal to let terror dictate their lives.

I share these memories today especially for our current students, many of whom were not yet born or are too young to remember that Tuesday morning. For their generation, September 11 is a historical event, but I hope they will also view it as a profound lesson in how communities respond to the unthinkable.

You do not need to wear a uniform or rush into a burning building to be brave. Courage is often found in the resolve to keep moving forward, to lend a voice of comfort to those who are grieving, and to show up for your community when it is hardest to do so.

Please consider joining our community in solidarity with the victims and families impacted by this tragedy at one of the following events:

  • September 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.鈥25th Anniversary of September 11 Memorial Prayer Service on the Flagpole Lawn
  • September 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.鈥National Day of Service: Students, faculty and staff, in partnership with Long Island Cares, will assemble care packages for veterans at the Ruth S. Harley University Center, Rooms 113 and 115
  • September 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.鈥Trip to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum led by the Division of Student Affairs
  • September 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.鈥Blood Drive at the Ruth S. Harley University Center, Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom
  • September 15 through October 18, 2026鈥擜苍 exhibition of artwork inspired by the September 11 tragedy created by sculptor and educator Christopher Saucedo, Adelphi professor of art and art history, who lost his brother Gregory, a firefighter, in the attacks

Tomorrow, as we pause to remember the thousands of lives lost and the heroes who gave everything, I ask that we also reflect on the power of ordinary courage. Let us honor the memory of September 11 by extending grace to one another, by cherishing the bonds we share here at Adelphi, and by finding our own quiet ways to be brave.

Sincerely,

Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD
President

Dear Adelphi Community,

I am thrilled to share some exciting news about one of our distinguished alumni who is making an incredible impact in our community. The 茄子视频 Board of Trustees appointed Leonard C. Achan 鈥99, MA, RN, ANP, as our new board chair following a special meeting in July, taking over from Trustee William Fuessler 鈥79, who stepped up as acting chair for the past five months.

Chair Achan鈥檚 story truly embodies the Adelphi spirit. A proud first-generation American born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, he began his professional journey right here on our campus, earning his bachelor鈥檚 degree in nursing. Like so many of his fellow nursing alumni, Chair Achan started his career at the bedside as a medical ICU nurse and adult acute care nurse practitioner鈥攁n experience that deeply informed his compassionate approach to leadership as he became an accomplished healthcare executive and community and business leader.

Today, Chair Achan serves as president and CEO of LiveOnNY. He previously served as the inaugural president of the Innovation Institute at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) after serving as their chief innovation officer. Prior to that, he led major executive initiatives across several roles at the Mount Sinai Health System and served as senior associate dean for global communications, branding, and reputation at the Icahn School of Medicine. As co-founder and chairman of Quality Reviews Inc., he built a digital health platform deployed in more than 150 hospitals, elevating the care experience for more than 30 million patients nationwide.

Throughout his career, Chair Achan鈥檚 devotion to Adelphi has never wavered. While serving for more than a decade as a trustee, including five years as a board officer, he has consistently invested back into our campus鈥攔eturning to lecture, establishing two endowed scholarships, and founding the Achan Family Interfaith Center.

Having worked with him during my time on the board and in our recent conversations, I have seen his razor-sharp mind, energy, and deep passion for our university firsthand. He is a shining example of our strength in producing leaders in nursing, health care and business. I have the utmost confidence that his ambition and commitment to higher education will continue to drive Adelphi forward.

I also want to thank Trustee Fuessler for his steady leadership of the board. His partnership with our senior leaders helped maintain our standard of excellence during an important time of transition at Adelphi. As one of our longest-tenured trustees and someone who has built a family legacy here, it came as no surprise that he approached this responsibility with great care. His ongoing service on the board will continue to benefit our University and serve as a trusted resource for our new chair.

Please join me in celebrating Chair Achan and thanking Trustee Fuessler for their outstanding service to the University.

Warm regards,

Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD

Dear Adelphi Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Cheung-Gaffney, JD, as 茄子视频鈥檚 general counsel, as well as the formal establishment of the Office of Legal Affairs.

This strategic shift to internal legal counsel was one of my first priorities after taking office in June. Adelphi has traditionally relied on outsourced legal services from external law firms, and transitioning to a dedicated, in-house legal model will allow us to operate with significantly greater efficiency, improve response times, reduce external legal costs and provide proactive, hands-on guidance to units across our University. In the evolving landscape of higher education regulations, governance and compliance, having on-campus legal leadership integrated into our daily operations will prove essential to our long-term success.

About Elizabeth Cheung-Gaffney

Liz brings a wealth of higher education, administrative and legal expertise to Adelphi, making her a highly respected leader in regional higher education circles. Most recently, she served as university counsel and secretary to the board of trustees at Long Island University (LIU), where she managed university compliance, board governance, collective bargaining agreements, litigation, student affairs and NCAA compliance.

Prior to LIU, Liz served as general counsel and interim executive director for New York University鈥檚 Office of the President Emeritus, as well as general counsel and senior program officer for The Catalyst Foundation for Universal Education. Earlier in her career, she was a first-chair litigation and arbitration attorney with the New York City Department of Education鈥檚 General Counsel Office and practiced complex commercial litigation at law firms in Washington, D.C., and New York.

Liz earned her Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School, where she served on the Journal of Legislation staff. She completed her B.A. in Economics and Political Science at Columbia University. At Columbia, she was an Academic All-Ivy League soccer student-athlete. She was inducted into the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. Liz is also a published scholar on sports law and humanitarian development.

Office Structure and Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the president, the newly established Office of Legal Affairs oversees and manages all university legal matters, risk management and regulatory compliance.

The following units benefit from this new organizational structure:

  • Contracts and Policies: Oversight of university contract review, management and institutional policy frameworks now fall under the Office of Legal Affairs.
  • Office of Community Concerns and Resolutions: This office reports directly to University Counsel.
  • Title IX Office: University Counsel provides executive legal oversight and administrative supervision for the Title IX Office, ensuring full compliance with federal, state and institutional standards.

I look forward to working closely with Liz and the Office of Legal Affairs as it develops into a trusted resource and partner to everyone in our community. If you have any questions about this restructuring or how you can engage with Legal Affairs, feel free to contact me.

Please join me in warmly welcoming Liz to Adelphi as she helps guide our institution forward.

Sincerely,

Michael Balboni ’81, JD
President
