This testing is required by New York State and should have minimal impact on your day. During testing, you may hear an alarm for a few seconds; evacuation is not required. In a true emergency, the alarms would ring continuously, and we would directly communicate any need to evacuate.

Following testing, there may be a slight discoloration of the water in some campus buildings. This temporary condition can be easily resolved by running the water for a minute or two.

We appreciate your understanding and support of our community’s continued safety and well-being.

Update: May 19, 2026

Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service has fully resumed and all trains on all LIRR branches are now operating on or close to schedule. The three-day transit strike ended when a tentative contract agreement was reached on May 18, 2026.

Update: May 17, 2026

(LIRR) service is currently suspended systemwide amid a labor strike that has entered a second day. Travel disruptions are expected across the region tomorrow.

If you are traveling to campus, please plan ahead and allow extra travel time:

  • Alternative transportation options are posted on the official websites of the, and.

  • ´¡»å±ð±ô±è³ó¾±â€™s Panther Express shuttle page is updated with the latest service information.

Faculty and supervisors are encouraged to provide reasonable flexibility for students regarding final exams and employees who support essential operations and services. Please note that Commencement activities remain scheduled as planned for later this week.

The potential duration of the strike is unknown, so we will continue to share updates and resources on our website and ´¡»å±ð±ô±è³ó¾±â€™s social media channels (@adelphiU) as the situation evolves.

Update: May 16, 2026

The first strike in 30 years began at 12:00 a.m. Saturday, May 16 and LIRR train service is suspended systemwide. Regional commuting disruptions are expected to affect commuters across the New York metro area.

Refer to the guidance, resources and support information provided in our initial message below, including transportation alternatives, academic flexibility and campus accommodations. ´¡»å±ð±ô±è³ó¾±â€™s Panther Express shuttle page has been updated with the latest service information.

We will continue to post updates here and on ´¡»å±ð±ô±è³ó¾±â€™s social media channels (@adelphiU) as the situation evolves, and we recommend following the official websites of the , and.

May 14, 2026

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Adelphi continues to monitor news of a looming that could shut down train service as early as Saturday, May 16. Even if you don’t ride the LIRR, regional travel disruptions are expected to affect roads, buses, subways, parking availability and overall commute times across the New York metro area.

We will update this message to keep you apprised of any status changes.

We are taking proactive steps to support our community in case of disruptions to our Garden City campus operations and academic activities—including final exams and Commencement events.

Below is a compilation of resources and guidance to help prepare our community members.

For All Commuters

  • Plan Alternative Transportation: We urge everyone who relies on the LIRR for their commute to immediately begin exploring alternative travel options, including carpooling and buses.
  • Check for Revised Campus Shuttle Services and Schedules: Follow the Panther Express Shuttle website for any changes to service (such as increased operation in response to need).
  • Follow Official University Updates: We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates via this message, email and University social media channels.
  • Consider a Flexible or Remote Schedule: The suggests that LIRR riders try to work remotely, as traveling will likely be complicated. If you must be on campus, traveling during non-peak hours may make your commute easier.
  • Expect Flexibility and Continued Support: Faculty and supervisors are encouraged to provide reasonable flexibility for students and employees affected by significant commuting disruptions, including attendance, deadlines and work arrangements where appropriate and feasible. The University remains committed to maintaining essential campus operations, academic continuity and student services.
  • Follow Official Websites: Refer to the websites for the , and.

For Students

  • Stay in Touch With Your Professors: If a strike occurs and you are unable to get to campus, please notify your professors as soon as possible.
  • Check Your Course Websites: Regularly check your course websites/learning management systems for any changes to class or exam plans from your professors.
  • Consider Staying on Campus: Our Office of Residence Life and Housing is prepared to offer limited short-term housing options for commuter students who need to remain on campus for in-person academic obligations, including final exams and commencement-related activities. To inquire, email housing@adelphi.edu. Housing availability is limited.

Commencement Activities Remain Scheduled

We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we navigate this potential disruption.

This safety measure is in place while we repair a burst fire sprinkler pipe in the underground parking garage; we anticipate the system will be fully restored by 10:00pm tonight.

Please take note of the following:

  1. The Nexus Building and the Nexus Underground Parking Garage remain open for normal operations.
  2. There was no damage to the building or property, and no injuries occurred from the incident.
  3. The Fire Marshal has inspected the premises and authorized the building to remain open; the Fire Panel has been returned to normal operations.
  4. The Fire Watch will be conducted and remain in effect until the fire sprinkler pipe is fully restored, which is expected to occur around 10:00pm today, May 4.

In accordance with Section F901.7 of the New York State Fire Code, this Fire Watch involves implementation of a temporary fire protection measure in situations where fire safety systems are impaired, inoperable, or undergoing maintenance. This entails assigning trained personnel to monitor the affected areas continuously to watch for signs of fire and take any necessary action to ensure the safety of the occupants and property.

Thank you for your understanding and support of our community’s continued safety and well-being.

Dear Adelphi Community,

In advance of Spring Break next week, March 16–22, we would like to provide the following parking advisory and guidance. As many of us prepare to travel, the Department of Public Safety and Transportation aims to help ensure you enjoy a fun, safe and healthy break.

Parking Advisory

Adelphi community members who plan to leave a vehicle on campus during Spring Break must move the vehicle to the Motamed or Nexus underground parking garages before departing campus; this allows the University to efficiently manage the lots in the event of inclement weather. Failure to move your vehicle may result in a ticket, fines and possible towing at the owner’s expense.

As a reminder, all vehicles parked on campus must have a current ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ parking decal.

Panther Express Shuttle Service Advisory

The University will be open during Spring Break, and while the Panther Express shuttle service will be available during this period, service will conclude by 6:30 p.m. on weekdays. Weekend service will run from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on March 21-22. Regular shuttle service will resume after Spring Break on Monday, March 23.

See the current Panther Express shuttle schedule, regularly updated by the Department of Public Safety and Transportation.

Spring Break Guidance for a Safe Vacation

View our extensive Spring Break Safety Tips on the Public Safety Website. Planning to travel? We advise checking for your destination. Note that these advisories can evolve rapidly.

Staying on Campus During the Break?

Public Safety is here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

  • Call Public Safety at 516.877.3511 or ext. 3507.

  • Blue light emergency call boxes and red phones around campus will connect you with Public Safety.

  • Visit the Public Safety in Levermore Hall, Suite 113 or the Command Center on the west side of Levermore Hall.

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call the Public Safety Command Center at 516.877.3511.

Important Safety Resources and Information

If you see something, say something: If you become aware of an issue, incident or troubling situation that causes you anxiety, stress or fear, you should promptly report it. If the situation appears imminent and/or includes the risk of violence to yourself or others, call 911, contact Public Safety by dialing “5” from any campus phone or call 516.877.3511.

Mass Notification System: To ensure you receive emergency and campus closure messages without delay, take a few moments to confirm your Emergency Notification Preferences to stay updated.

  • Don’t miss an Adelphi Alert—save 516-234-5783 in your contacts so it won’t be marked as spam.

Resources for Your Preparedness:

  • Request a Public Safety training for your department or group to learn important ways to be prepared for hostile intruder events, including run, hide, fight guidelines and Stop The Bleed life-saving techniques.

  • Videos to watch:

    • : resources to help you stay safe on campus and in our community.

    • : learn what to do during a lockdown/shelter in place due to a hostile intruder.

    • : familiarize yourself with our three types of classroom door locks.

  • Understand what to do during a campus lockdown/shelter-in-place situation.

  • Know our evacuation procedures in case an emergency makes this necessary.

  • Stop the Bleed kits are mounted in all public safety vehicles and in the Performing Arts Center, Center for Recreation and Sports, Swirbul Library, Nexus, Levermore Hall and the University Center.

  • The University Center has automated external defibrillator (AED) devices for trained individuals to use.

Our Preparedness:

  • Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT): Adelphi was one of the first institutions to establish a dedicated team for monitoring and addressing reported safety concerns. BIT (previously the Threat Assessment Team) is coordinated by Public Safety to help address or prevent serious safety issues that involve our community in support of Adelphi’s incident reporting and resolution procedures.

  • Testing and Practice: At least once a year we test our Emergency Operations Plan and our Mass Notification System (Text/Call). Our Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is published annually (in October) in accordance with the Clery Act. And, in support of our goal to always be prepared and ready, our department and ´¡»å±ð±ô±è³ó¾±â€™s leaders practice the University’s emergency response on an ongoing basis with tabletop exercises.

  • Local Police Support: We maintain close working relationships with the police departments of Garden City, Hempstead, Nassau County, Suffolk County, Poughkeepsie and New York City. All Adelphi campus locations are supported by these police services, including criminal investigation and emergency response.
