A campus should feel like more than just a place to study鈥攊t should be a home away from home. By making our Garden City campus a safe and secure environment, 茄子视频 has done just that.

Over the years, Adelphi has been consistently ranked as one of the safest colleges in both New York state and the country by reputable organizations such as and BackgroundCheck.org. But it鈥檚 not just these organizations reporting this. It鈥檚 the students, too. In past Adelphi Student Quality of Life surveys, 92 percent of students felt well-informed about how to respond to campus emergencies, while 94 percent reported feeling safe on the Garden City campus.

Safe Town, Safe Campus

Adelphi鈥檚 75-acre campus is located in the suburb of Garden City, New York. According to local law enforcement statistics, violent crime is exceptionally rare in Garden City, falling well below both the New York state and national averages. Garden City is also ranked as one of the by several sources.

With Garden City as its backdrop, Adelphi has taken further action to ensure students鈥 safety at their home away from home. Adelphi maintains an emergency notification system that can quickly inform community members of any campus incidents. The University also offers an active safety and crime prevention program, including comprehensive safety training. Additionally, all entrance doors to University residence halls are permanently locked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Any access to dormitories requires an authorized electronic student ID card.

Hop on a Shuttle for Safety

Making regular runs around campus, the Panther Express provides free shuttle bus transportation to nearby train stations, supermarkets and shopping plazas鈥攑articularly during the nighttime.

Credit for security on campus goes to the Department of Public Safety and Transportation. The department is committed to transparency and regularly issues a fire and safety report which outlines practices, incidents that occurred on campus and responses to those incidents.

Adelphi鈥檚 officers also patrol the Garden City campus鈥攐ften on bicycles 鈥24/7, 365 days a year. But students don鈥檛 need to rely solely on patrolling officers. Students have direct, immediate access to campus security. In the event of an incident, they can dial “5” from any on-campus phone, use the blue light emergency call boxes scattered across the grounds or call the emergency line at 516.877.3511.

Not Just Safe. Safe From Pesticides, Too

Adelphi鈥檚 campus is more than just a safe space. It鈥檚 also a beautiful green space with prestigious accreditation. In October 2025, Adelphi renewed its Level I Arboretum Accreditation through , part of the esteemed Morton Arboretum registry. Valid until October 2030, this accreditation places Adelphi on the global registry of accredited arboreta and public gardens. And it鈥檚 not hard to see why.

For more than 20 years, 茄子视频 has maintained a 100 percent pesticide-free campus that鈥檚 fostered a rich biodiversity. Its campus has since become a gorgeous landscape that鈥檚 home to more than 100 different plant species, some of them with unique backstories. The azaleas on the flagpole lawn were planted by the Class of 1935 and have thrived for nearly 100 years. The vibrant pink cherry trees and rose garden have become iconic visual landmarks on campus during the springtime.

Plans are currently underway to label plant species and weave the arboretum into academic programs. There鈥檚 also a plan to develop a dedicated arboretum campus map that shows key points of interest, allowing students and visitors to explore notable plant specimens across the grounds.

This prestigious arboretum accreditation underscores Adelphi鈥檚 unwavering commitment to sustainability. But the University鈥檚 biodiversity does more than just protect the planet.

It offers a vibrant, living oasis that provides students with moments of calm and reflection鈥攑roving that a truly safe campus is one that protects both the body and the mind.

On Thursday, June 11, the 茄子视频 Board of Trustees hosted the official ribbon cutting and celebrated the grand opening of the University鈥檚 state-of-the-art Manhattan Center. Located in the heart of New York City at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, the highly anticipated facility is poised to serve as a critical talent pipeline for the city鈥檚 most high-demand industries.

The grand opening event welcomed University leadership, distinguished guests, community partners and Helen Arteaga Landaverde, PhD, New York City鈥檚 deputy mayor for health and human services, for an exclusive look inside the modern academic hub, which comprises three floors and more than 51,000 square feet. During the ribbon-cutting festivities, attendees participated in guided tours of high-tech classrooms; STEAM, nursing simulation and computer labs; and student lounges, study spaces and collaborative learning areas.

鈥淭onight, the future has a new address: 529 Fifth Avenue,鈥 said Adelphi President Michael A.L. Balboni 鈥81, JD. 鈥淭he new center will prove the value of higher education … . Adelphi is connecting higher education with opportunities.鈥

Construction on the facility began with a groundbreaking in April 2025. Designed to meet the evolving needs of today鈥檚 workforce, the Manhattan Center鈥檚 鈥減rograms in healthcare, technology, business, human service and education will bring the best of Adelphi to Manhattan,鈥 said Jennifer Lancaster, PhD, executive director of the Manhattan Center and dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies. The center has already begun transforming career pathways for its students: The inaugural student cohort began in May 2026 with Adelphi鈥檚 accelerated nursing program, designed to address the region鈥檚 nursing shortage. STEAM education programs are also underway. The remaining Manhattan Center graduate and professional programs are scheduled to begin in Fall 2026.

For students pursuing a career in , working with a patient for the first time can be intimidating. The nerves, uncertainty, and pressure to perform can often make these early interactions overwhelming.

To address these challenges, 茄子视频 has opened the Charna Caddy DiSanto Clinical Simulation Voice Lab, a lab designed to help students build their confidence and develop essential clinical skills before they work with patients with voice disorders.

Hands-On Learning for Speech-Language Pathology

The new voice lab employs a hands-on, experiential learning approach tailored for students in the graduate program in speech-language pathology, offered through the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education and Health Sciences. The lab was generously funded by the family of the late Charna Caddy DiSanto, a speech-language pathologist and clinical supervisor for Adelphi鈥檚 speech-language pathology students from 1986 to 2006. Her family鈥檚 gift represents a lasting investment in student success.

Steven Cox, PhD, CCC-SLP, associate professor and lab director, emphasized that 鈥淭his clinical experience gives our graduate students specialized training in voice care that bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world patient care, equipping them with the skills they need for clinical placements focused on voice disorders.鈥

A Way to Develop Skills Before Treating Patients

Clinical simulation, as defined by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, allows students to gain valuable clinical experience through alternative methods rather than through direct patient interaction. Now, thanks to the Charna Caddy DiSanto Clinical Simulation Voice Lab, graduate students can work with manikins, virtual reality, and simulated patient scenarios before their clinical placements involving patients with voice concerns.

鈥淪tudents also earn clinical hours toward graduation, certification, and licensing while developing their clinical skills in a structured and safe environment,鈥 explained Dr. Cox.

A sense of safety is crucial, particularly for students encountering clinical work for the first time. Anne Marie Skvarla, clinic director of the Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders, noted that many students report understandable feelings of anxiety and uncertainty in their initial interactions with patients.

Boosting Confidence for Real-World Experiences With Patients

Research indicates that simulated learning experiences can boost confidence, enhance interpersonal skills, and better prepare students for real-world clinical situations. Inside the lab, students participate in hands-on activities that replicate real clinical procedures and interactions. A standout experience involves using rigid and flexible endoscopes, which are thin, lighted instruments used to view the vocal folds on a manikin, a critical diagnostic skill for identifying voice disorders.

鈥淭his becomes a highlight for many students,鈥 Dr. Cox noted, adding that the lab also integrates virtual reality and computerized analysis tools to enrich the student learning experience.

Promoting Teamwork and Problem-Solving Skills

In addition to individual skill-building, the lab emphasizes communication, teamwork, and collaborative problem-solving. At the beginning of each semester, students participate in an escape-room-style activity that challenges them to work together and uncover clues about a simulated patient鈥檚 condition. 鈥淚t helps them learn to work collaboratively as part of a team as they try to uncover important background information about their patient,鈥 said Dr. Cox.

Hands-On Learning for Communication Sciences

Very few universities across the country offer simulation labs for speech-language pathology students. The Charna Caddy DiSanto Clinical Simulation Voice Lab distinguishes itself by providing students access to advanced technology and immersive training experiences. The establishment of the lab underscores Adelphi鈥檚 commitment to experiential learning, a vital aspect of its academic strategy. By allowing students to practice clinical techniques in a controlled environment, the University ensures that they enter the field with greater confidence and competence.

Preparing Speech-Language Pathology Students for Success

Ultimately, the goal of the Charna Caddy DiSanto Clinical Simulation Voice Lab is to ensure that students are well-prepared when they work with patients with voice concerns. 鈥淏y developing their skills using clinical simulation, students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to treat their first patient with voice concerns,鈥 concluded Dr. Cox.

As the first Adelphi alumnus and parent鈥攁nd the first Long Island native鈥攖o serve as president of the University, Balboni is intimately familiar with the transformative power of an Adelphi education. He graduated cum laude from the University in 1981 with a degree in biology and is the proud parent of an Adelphi alumna. Throughout his career, he has continually served his alma mater, including as an adjunct faculty member and, most recently, as a distinguished member and chair of the board of trustees.

Balboni emerged from a national search as the leader best positioned to secure public-private partnerships, champion the University regionally and nationally, and drive institutional growth. A defining hallmark of Balboni’s career鈥攆rom his roles in government to corporate boardrooms鈥攈as been his ability to build relationships, work with experts and forge consensus. He steps into the presidency fiercely committed to shared governance, protecting academic freedom and ensuring that the Adelphi campus remains a vibrant, inclusive environment for all students and faculty to thrive in.

In tandem with this announcement, Adelphi鈥檚 board named Christopher K. Storm Jr., PhD, who has served as Adelphi鈥檚 interim president since last June, to the newly created role of senior executive vice president of academic affairs and provost. This complementary leadership structure allows the provost to focus internally on teaching, research and student outcomes, while President Balboni manages the complex operational and external facets of the University.

鈥淭he landscape of higher education is undergoing rapid and profound changes,鈥 said William Fuessler 鈥79, acting chair of the board of trustees and chair of the University鈥檚 Presidential Search Committee. 鈥淭o thrive, Adelphi requires a president who is a relentless external advocate and a proven executive. Michael possesses the exact blend of operational strength and external advocacy we need.鈥

“I am thrilled to be returning to my alma mater to lead a community that means so much to me. It truly is a full-circle moment,” said president-elect Balboni. “I have watched how the University has progressed, and I look forward to working with Dr. Storm and the entire community to take Adelphi to new heights as the premier institution of higher learning on Long Island.鈥

鈥淚t has been a tremendous honor to serve as interim president of Adelphi, where I have spent my entire 20-year career,鈥 shared Dr. Storm. 鈥淭he past year provided me with new opportunities to deepen my connections across campus while maintaining the University鈥檚 strong, stable footing before taking our next leap forward. I very much look forward to working with Michael Balboni as we embark on a bold new direction for Adelphi.鈥

Balboni assumes leadership at a time of remarkable advancement and financial strength for Adelphi. The University boasts a balanced budget, a $282 million endowment and a highly successful $100 million fundraising campaign that is nearing its goal. Underscoring this position of strength, Adelphi has achieved record enrollment in two of the past three years and is launching an ambitious infrastructure initiative to further support student and faculty success.

Adelphi continues to elevate its academic profile. Recognized by Forbes as the premier private university on Long Island, the institution pairs this academic prestige with its reputation as one of the safest campuses in America and an NCAA Division II athletics powerhouse. Looking ahead, the University is actively expanding its regional impact through the new Manhattan Center on Fifth Avenue in New York City, delivering high-demand graduate programs in artificial intelligence, business, nursing, social work, psychology, literature and education to meet the evolving needs of the modern workforce.

When Mark W. Jordan 鈥63 arrived at 茄子视频, he quickly distinguished himself as a scholar. After his first year, he earned a full scholarship and continued to receive essential financial support for the remainder of his time at Adelphi. That support allowed Jordan to focus fully on his studies and gain an education that would shape his future. Today, he is committed to making that opportunity possible for a new generation of Adelphi students.

As a liberal arts student, Jordan developed the analytical discipline and critical thinking skills that prepared him for law school and a successful legal career that spanned decades, including 35 years in the healthcare industry. He retired in 2009 and has always credited Adelphi with providing the foundation for his success.

Mark W. Jordan 鈥63 holding and embracing his young granddaughter indoors.

Mark W. Jordan 鈥63 shares a quiet moment with his granddaughter, reflecting the family values and future generations his philanthropy at Adelphi helps support.

Establishing a Scholarship for Honors College Students

In 2013, Jordan established the Mark W. Jordan Scholarship to support Honors College students with strong academic promise and demonstrated financial need. His goal was simple: to help students experience the same transformative opportunity he received鈥攁n Adelphi education supported by scholarship assistance that allows them to focus on learning, growth, and possibility.

Reflecting on his commitment, Jordan said, 鈥淭he education I received at Adelphi shaped my career, my path, and my leadership. Giving back each year is one way I can help ensure students today have that same foundation for opportunity.鈥

Growing Impact Through the Momentum 2 Endowment Match Campaign

Jordan deepened that commitment in 2022 when he became the first donor to participate in Adelphi鈥檚 Momentum 2 Endowment Match Campaign. With a $25,000 pledge to grow his scholarship, his gift was matched by the University鈥攊mmediately doubling its long-term impact for students. His early participation helped set the stage for more to follow.

As part of the University鈥檚 Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact, the endowment match initiative has helped expand scholarship support and strengthen Adelphi鈥檚 long-term investment in student success. By the end of the campaign鈥檚 third year in 2025, it had generated $6.4 million, created 56 new endowed funds, and strengthened 38 existing ones.

Today, Jordan remains deeply engaged as a lifelong learner and educator, delivering lectures on subjects as varied as Shakespeare, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sir Ernest Shackleton and the Mutiny on the Bounty at institutions including the University of California, Berkeley; Santa Clara University; the University of South Carolina; and California State University, East Bay, as well as the Walnut Creek Library Foundation, which he and his wife, Cindy, also support. They spend much of their free time traveling and have visited all seven continents.

Leadership Giving

Because his giving reflects the many ways philanthropy can take shape in support of Adelphi鈥檚 mission, Jordan is recognized in all four of Adelphi鈥檚 Leadership Recognition and Giving Societies (LEAD):

Across his endowed scholarship, annual giving, and planned gift, Jordan’s generosity will advance the priorities that shape our University鈥檚 future: scholarships, academic excellence, life-changing student experiences, a modern and beautiful campus, and a diverse and vibrant community. His story reflects the powerful cycle of philanthropy鈥攕tudents supported by Adelphi who later return to create opportunity for those who follow.

茄子视频 is deeply grateful for a transformational $1.77 million legacy gift from the late Lee Steinberg, a devoted patron of the arts and friend of the University, which will significantly strengthen the future of the 茄子视频 Performing Arts Center.

In recognition of her extraordinary generosity, the University has named the Center鈥檚 recital hall in her honor鈥攖he Lee Steinberg Recital Hall.

鈥淟ee Steinberg鈥檚 legacy gift reflects a deep belief in the transformative power of the arts,鈥 said Tom Kline, EdD, vice president of University advancement and external relations. 鈥淗er generosity strengthens not only our facilities, but the student experiences and creative opportunities that define Adelphi鈥檚 performing arts community.鈥

鈥淭he Lee Steinberg Recital Hall honors Lee鈥檚 commitment to a legacy of inspiring student performers and audiences for generations,鈥 said Blyth Daylong, executive director of 茄子视频鈥檚 Performing Arts Center.

A Lifelong Commitment to the Arts in New York

The gift, received in July 2025 from Ms. Steinberg鈥檚 estate, places her among the members of Adelphi鈥檚 Million Dollar Roundtable, which recognizes our most generous donors with cumulative giving exceeding $1 million. Steinberg died in 2021 at the age of 106. Through her bequest, she expressed her wish to support arts programming and performance centers on Long Island, continuing a lifetime commitment to cultural institutions throughout the greater New York region.

Planned giving has flourished at Adelphi in recent years. In Fiscal Year 2024鈥2025, the University鈥檚 pipeline of documented future support exceeded $40 million. All levels of leadership giving at Adelphi are shaping the long-term strength of academic programs, student opportunities and institutional excellence.

In accordance with Steinberg鈥檚 intent, the University has established two funds to support the Performing Arts Center鈥攖he Lee Steinberg Performing Arts Center Capital Fund for immediate physical improvements and the Lee Steinberg Performing Arts Center Excellence Endowed Fund to provide permanent, flexible support for the Center鈥檚 ongoing capital, programming and operational needs. This generous gift reinforces Adelphi’s reputation as a preeminent leader in arts education and performance in our region.

Applause for Improved Lighting, Seating, Flooring and Acoustics at Adelphi鈥檚 Performing Arts Center

Enhancements to the Center will elevate the experience of student performers, faculty directors, guest artists and audience members. Several capital improvements have already been funded through an initial $500,000 allocation, including:

  • A comprehensive refresh of the Olmsted Theatre, featuring new lighting, audience seating, carpeting, acoustic panels and painting, as well as the installation of a new digital sound mixing console
  • Brighter lighting in the Center鈥檚 second-floor dance studios
  • New house lights and work lights in the Concert Hall

Beginning in 2027, annual distributions from the endowment will provide sustained support for artistic programming and facility excellence.

Steinberg briefly served on Adelphi鈥檚 Performing Arts Council and remained committed to supporting the arts throughout her life. Her bequest ensures that generations of Adelphi students will continue to learn, perform and thrive in spaces designed for excellence in the arts.

Advancing The Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact

This seven-figure investment advances Adelphi鈥檚 Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact, demonstrating how philanthropic leadership translates into visible improvements, strengthened programs and lasting institutional growth. Through leadership gifts like Steinberg鈥檚, Adelphi continues its mission to transform students鈥 lives and reinforces its role as a cultural anchor on Long Island.
