Personal Statement

Personal Statement

I am a social work researcher dedicated to improving health and well-being for vulnerable populations in the United States and around the world. My research spans three interconnected areas: social determinants of health across the life course, behavioral and emotional indicators of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and community-based interventions to improve health outcomes globally.

Social determinants of health. I study how poverty, migration, family structure, and access to resources shape health across the life course. Nationally, my work focuses on children from underrepresented groups living with kinship caregivers. Globally, I examine the well-being of ethnic minorities and children from migrant worker families, including the impact of global migration on children living in impoverished mountain regions of South Asia.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Through the DRIVES Project, I use more than two million naturalistic driving trips collected over the past decade to ask a practical question: can everyday behavior reveal changes in brain health before symptoms appear? My work shows that shifts in driving patterns, such as driving less, braking and cornering harder, and following less predictable routines, can signal preclinical Alzheimer’s disease and even help distinguish Alzheimer’s disease from depression, two conditions that often look alike in the clinic. Because driving data are collected passively as people go about their lives, they offer a low-burden, scalable path toward earlier detection, more accurate diagnosis, and personalized support that helps older adults stay safe, mobile, and independent.

Community-based interventions. I develop and implement community-based programs that improve health outcomes for children from vulnerable families, with a focus on strengthening food security, building healthy dietary behaviors, and preventing the dual burden of malnutrition.

I have led and contributed to research and consulting projects in India, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Working with partners around the world allows me to compare policies and programs across contexts, bring global lessons to local communities, and advance social justice at both the community and global levels.
