When junior Nicolette Macchio was an incoming first-year student, she received an email about the First-Year Community Action Program (FCAP). “I thought, 'Wow, that's a really cool thing!'" she said. She joined and loved it so much that she became an FCAP leader.

For the second year, the Pink Patch Project is back at ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ, raising awareness and funds for those affected by breast cancer.

ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ has been nominated in nine categories in the annual Bethpage Best of Long Island competition organized by Schneps Media. Online voting continues through December 15 and winners will be announced early in 2022. Individuals may vote once a day.

Thomas Kline, EdD, will join ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ's Executive Leadership team as vice president of University advancement and external relations beginning November 1. Dr. Kline is currently vice president for institutional advancement at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he has served in several roles since 2013.

As the nation approaches the 20th anniversary of September 11, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City commemorates and honors those killed in the terrorist attacks of that day—as well as the earlier terrorist truck bomb attack that occurred on February 26, 1993—and the survivors and first responders, and recognizes the many ways in which the world came together in the aftermath.

On September 11, 2001, a 27-year-old management associate with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey went to his office on the 86th floor of One World Trade Center. When the building was hit shortly after, he led several coworkers to safety.

Like many first-year students, Alberto Cruz didn't come to Adelphi with a career planned out. He was from nearby Hicksville, New York, and wanted to stay local. He also knew he wanted to help people. “Coming out of high school, I wanted either to be a nurse or a social worker," he said, adding that Adelphi offered him a scholarship and had strong programs in both fields.

For nearly a decade, accounting students from ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ have helped low-income individuals and families on Long Island prepare their tax returns. The students, working together with Bethpage Federal Credit Union, are part of a nationwide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

For the fourth consecutive year, an ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ student has been named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. Miguel Velasquez, a sophomore in Adelphi’s prestigious Levermore Global Scholars program who is majoring in history in the accelerated 4+1 Scholar Teacher Education Program (STEP), has been selected as a 2021–2022 Newman Civic Fellow.

Since the January reopening of ÇÑ×ÓÊÓƵ's newly renovated Ruth S. Harley University Center (UC), several local and state government officials and community members have stopped by to visit. In early February, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Evlyn Tsimis, JD, deputy county executive for economic development, took a tour of the completely reimagined building and hub of the University's Garden City campus.

During February and into March, Adelphi acknowledges the achievements, sacrifices and accomplishments of Black people in our own community and around the world.
