Dr. Palley is the coauthor of “In Our Hands: The Struggle for U.S. Child Care Policy” (NYU Press, 2014).

Even in this year鈥檚 contentious presidential election campaign, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have agreed on one issue: the need for expanded access to child care for working families. In a recent essay published by the online journal, , Elizabeth Palley, Ph.D., professor in the , and her colleague Corey Shdaimah, Ph.D., from the University of Maryland, propose ways to move听forward on this issue to create a universal child care program.

鈥淲e believe there is a window of opportunity to develop broad-based support not only across party lines but across sectors鈥攂usiness, faith organizations, feminists, employers and unions,鈥 they write. 鈥淎dvocates could take advantage of this. A coalition, cutting across party lines, could work together to create a clear agenda around child care policy. Child care providers have been an听undervalued low-wage workforce听for far too long. They too need to be heard, as they are an important voice within this coalition.鈥
