Recent accomplishments by Political Science professors.

Regina S. Axelrod has听been continuing her research on the听nuclear renaissance for the upcoming 4th edition of her co-edited听book, GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT: LAW,听INSTITUTION, and POLICY. She was the invited lecturer for听鈥淓nvironmental Policy in the Czech听Republic,鈥 graduate government听program at the University of Higher听Economics, Prague Czech Republic,听October 30, 2012.

Michael Balboni founded听Redland Strategies Inc., a full-service听business development and government relations firm that specializes听in crisis communication, homeland听security, risk management, media听relations, marketing, thought leader听ship, disaster recovery and operations and strategic planning. In addition, Professor Balboni was appointed to the New York State Responds听Commission. This commission is听tasked with finding ways to ensure听that New York State is ready to听respond to future weather-related听disasters.

Margaret Gray recently received the Adelphi chapter听of Omicron Delta Kappa鈥檚 Academic听Advisor Award. She is preparing for听two conferences this semester, the听Latin American Studies Association听Congress and the Labor and Employment Relations Association听Conference, where she will discuss听her research on Hudson Valley听farm workers. In addition, Professor听Gray was interviewed for a WNYC听(NYC鈥檚 NPR affiliate) broadcast听about New York State farm workers.

Katie Laatikainen’s听491 page book The European Union听and International Institutions: Performance, Policy, Power (co-edited with听Knud Erik Joergensen, Aarhus University, Denmark) was published by听Routledge in January 2013. She has听just signed a contract to produce a听two volume, 60 chapter Sage Handbook of European Foreign Policy together with several co-editors in听Europe. During spring 2013, Professor Laatikainen will present a听paper “Empires of Humanity: Paternalism of the US and the EU in听Global Politics” (co-author Lisbeth听Aggestam at the University of Bath,听UK) at the International Studies听Conference in San Francisco in听April. At that conference she will听also participate in a round table on听Teaching International Organization听at chair a panel on IO Performance. In May, Professor听Laatikainen will present her paper听“Making a Splash or Roiling the Waters: The Impact of the Lisbon Treaty for the EU at the UN” at the European Union Studies Association听conference in Baltimore. She has听also been invited as a keynote听speaker on the Euro-crisis by a Pi听Sigma Alpha Colloquium at the University of Bridgeport in April.

Traci Levy is serving as听Interim Chairperson of the Political听Science Department, Director of听the Gender Studies minor, and the听department鈥檚 representative to the听Faculty 听Senate. She also continues听to work with the Collaboration听Project, focusing on community听building at Adelphi while working on听social justice issues. This summer,听she will begin research for an article听manuscript examining how the creation of 鈥渕ilitary caregiver leave鈥澨齭ignificantly extends those eligible听for work-related leave under Family听& Medical 听leave Act (FMLA) and听affects the state鈥檚 role in defining听and recognizing families.

Hugh A.听Wilson received the Arthur L.听Galub Award for The Best Paper by听a Faculty Member, 鈥淭he Framers,听the Constitution and the Origins of听American Political economy,鈥 which听was presented at the New York听State Political Science Association鈥檚听Annual 听conference, Albany, 2012.

Dr. Danielle Zach earned her听doctorate from the CUNY Graduate Center on February 1. She is听currently the lead researcher on a听project analyzing the international听response to maritime 听piracy off the听coast of Somalia. In addition, she is a听senior researcher at the Ralph听Bunche Institute for International听Studies, where she is engaged on issues of global governance, particularly in the area of international听peace and security. She recently听presented a paper at the 2012听Northeastern Political Science Association (NPSA) on Irish America and听the Northern Ireland conflict, which听is part of a broader research agenda听on the role of diasporas and civil听wars.
