At 茄子视频鈥檚 , there are聽many ways to advance excellence in healthcare education鈥攔anging from聽accolades recognizing past achievements (and spurring future ones) to聽improving student outcomes through innovation and collaboration.

Honors and Accolades

The 聽program at 茄子视频鈥檚 College of Nursing and Public聽Health ranks among 鈥檚 Best Hybrid R.N. to聽B.S.N. Programs 2015 in the nation.

RNtoBSN.org said in February 2015, 鈥淲e鈥檝e recognized [about聽50] programs because of their excellence in nursing education聽and the flexibility that they off er,鈥 for example, accommodating聽the needs of working students by offering online and traditional聽on-campus courses.

Patrick Coonan, Ed.D., R.N., NEA-BC, FACHE, the College鈥檚聽dean, said, 鈥淲e firmly believe in the need for R.N.s to have a聽baccalaureate degree. We focus our programs on making nurses聽successful and making sure that the experience meets their聽needs and the needs of the industry in the most effective way.鈥

In September 2014, the National League for Nursing recognized聽Adelphi and the College of Nursing and Public Health as a聽Center of Excellence (COE) for 2014鈥2018. Th e league cited聽Adelphi for 鈥渃reating environments that advance the science of聽nursing education.鈥

In its statement, 茄子视频鈥檚 College of Nursing and聽Public Health cited 鈥渁 focus on advancing the science of nursing聽education. The outcomes of the research undertaken by the聽faculty have influenced maintaining excellence in our three聽levels of education programs.鈥

Still other accolades: In July 2015, BestColleges.com ranked聽the College鈥檚 Master of Science in Nutrition one of the best in聽the online nutrition field, and U.S. News & World Report earlier聽placed the College among its 2015 Best Graduate Schools.

Collaborations

Deborah Ambrosio-Mawhirter 鈥81, M.S. 鈥95, Ed.D.,聽Department of Nursing Foundations chair, said the College聽developed the new perioperative capstone experience in Fall聽2014 as a collaborative eff ort with Winthrop-University聽Hospital. The capstone, which gives students the opportunity聽to apply for an OR fellowship upon graduation, began with a聽six-student cohort and rose to eight students in the Spring 2015聽semester.

鈥淭he perioperative internship will provide the student聽nurse with the ability to apply, integrate and evaluate聽nursing knowledge and skills in the perioperative setting,鈥澛爀ncompassing preoperative assessment, intraoperative surgery聽and postoperative care,鈥 she explained.

The College, which has always sent its students to Winthrop for聽clinicals, was invited last spring to participate in the hospital鈥檚聽two-day Interprofessional Simulation Experience鈥攄esigned to聽鈥減romote collaboration and communication to enhance patient聽outcomes,鈥 she said, adding that 11 Adelphi students took part.

鈥淲e are moving beyond the walls of one institution,鈥 she聽said, 鈥渁nd our students are now able to learn side by side with聽other healthcare professionals prior to graduation.鈥 She added,聽鈥淓ach student noted how beneficial and enjoyable this learning聽experience was, helping them to truly understand patient centered聽care鈥攖he goal of interprofessional teamwork.鈥

Marilyn Klainberg, Ed.D., chair of the Department of聽Family, Mental Health and Community Systems, said that聽her department is in the process of expanding and enhancing聽its students鈥 experiences in outreach to community agencies聽serving the needs of various constituents.

鈥淭hese include finding new and expanded community聽experiences which reflect the changes in our healthcare systems,鈥澛爏he said. 鈥淲e will be working closely with AHRC, Parker聽Jewish Geriatric Services, the Federation of Organizations聽and other senior services that provide a variety of community聽outreach programs to early childhood services, the well elderly聽and persons with mental health issues.鈥

Dr. Klainberg explained, 鈥淭he role of the nurse is changing and聽expanding, with an emphasis on an expanded role in providing聽prevention at all levels, primary, secondary and tertiary. We are聽preparing our nursing students in the advancement of issues聽related to healthcare both locally and internationally.鈥

She added that the College鈥檚 R.N. to M.S. program, offered聽to registered nurses who lack a B.S. but are seeking to advance聽their profession, will allow R.N.s to earn a B.S. and work on聽their M.S. degree. 鈥淲e are finalizing a joint venture with a聽community college, which will admit students simultaneously聽to Adelphi College of Nursing and Public Health at the same聽time they are admitted to the community college,鈥 she noted.聽鈥淭his will allow these students the ability to continue their聽advancement to a B.S. or M.S. degree at a reduced cost.鈥

Maryann Forbes, Ph.D. 鈥99, chair of the Department of聽Adult Health, said her course work emphasis is 鈥渙n ensuring聽that students gain a solid foundation in nursing and learn the聽necessary knowledge and skills to provide high-quality care to聽their medical surgical patients.鈥

To meet this goal, the College鈥檚 clinical and community affairs聽office has partnered with five area hospitals to form several聽Dedicated Educational Units (DEUs), she said. DEUs are a聽research-based, innovative alternative to the more traditional聽model of clinical education, in which one clinical instructor聽provides guidance for up to eight students in a medical surgical聽unit. 鈥淚n a DEU, each student is mentored one-on-one by a staff聽nurse, with a faculty instructor available to consult and assist with聽evaluation,鈥 she said. Under this model, staff nurses become the聽primary instructors of students, she said, while 鈥渢he faculty role聽shifts to providing support and educational guidance.鈥

Dr. Forbes said, 鈥淭h e DEU model has shown very promising聽results in both our Fundamentals of Nursing and Medical聽Surgical clinical rotations鈥攁nd continued expansion to other聽units, areas and settings is planned.鈥

Hasan Sapci, M.D., chair of the Department of Allied Health,聽has been developing collaborations of his own, with several聽leading academic medical centers that are advancing clinical聽informatics departments, including Yale-New Haven Hospital.聽In fact, he said, these partnership agreements are just the initial聽phase of his long-term plan.

The Caliber of Faculty and Administration

Recognition of Adelphi and the College鈥檚 strength in faculty聽and administration can be seen in the naming of Dean Coonan聽to the presidency of New York State Council of Deans of聽Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Nursing Programs (2012鈥撀2016) and, more recently, to Governor Andrew Cuomo鈥檚聽Medicaid Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP)聽Project Approval and Oversight Panel, a five-year appointment.

In June 2015, Dr. Coonan also was selected to receive the聽Melanie C. Dreher Outstanding Dean Award for Excellence in聽Chapter Support by the Sigma Th eta Tau International Honor聽Society of Nursing.

In addition, Jane White, Ph.D., the College鈥檚 associate dean for聽research, has just been selected for fellowship in the American聽Academy of Nursing, Washington, D.C. Th e academy鈥攚hose聽2,300 fellows are nursing leaders in education, management,聽practice and research鈥攕aid, 鈥淚nvitation to fellowship is more聽than recognition of one鈥檚 accomplishments within the nursing聽profession. Academy fellows also have a responsibility to engage聽with other health leaders outside the academy in transforming聽America鈥檚 health system by enhancing the quality of health and聽nursing [among other things].鈥 Dr. White also was named a聽visiting scientist by the North Shore-LIJ Health System鈥檚聽Institute for Nursing in 2012.

International Reputation

Students at the undergraduate and graduate levels often cite the聽strength of programs off ered by the College as the reason they聽decided to come here. Increasingly, students are being attracted聽to the campus from abroad by the reputation of the College鈥檚聽programs and faculty: Two students from Japan and one from聽India who are now pursuing their Ph.D. and two visiting聽scholars from China.
