Learn about Adelphi's expanding Social Work Programs in Orange County, New York.

When Eileen Chadwick started her career at 茄子视频聽32 years ago, she was overseeing field internships as one of only聽two staff members working at the recently opened . In her final year, Chadwick, now director of the , helped oversee the opening of a new,聽upstate operation for .

Adelphi is set to offer courses for the first time this fall in聽Middletown, New York. Two classes will be held in a rented classroom聽in the Bio-Tech Building at Orange County Community College聽(SUNY Orange). The initial offerings will be Issues in Social Welfare聽Policy I and Human Behavior Theory for Social Work Practice I,聽with second levels for both courses to be offered in Spring 2016. And聽that, according to Chadwick, is just the groundwork for building a聽presence in Orange County.

鈥淚n the future, students should be able to take additional classes聽online and also to come to the Hudson Valley campus to take some聽classes,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to make a real connection to the聽service providers and the healthcare centers catering to a working
student population.鈥

The parallels between the two northern campuses aren鈥檛 lost on聽Chadwick. The older facility, which is marking its 40th anniversary聽this year, opened after the Hudson Valley Division of the National聽Association of Social Workers and other agencies in and around聽Poughkeepsie approached Adelphi with a need for continuing聽education for working professionals in the area. The Orange County聽location draws working students from across the Sullivan/Orange/Rockland counties corridor, some driving as much as an hour to get聽to class. With a growing base of graduates working in the vicinity,聽the need for an expanded presence was realized.

鈥淲e developed a program to have some flexibility, which was聽unusual,鈥 Chadwick said of the early days at the Hudson Valley聽Center, adding that these efforts are being mirrored in Orange聽County. 鈥淲e had evening courses and a part-time program. We聽now have a history in the community of graduating people. That聽helps us with initiatives and identifying needs.鈥

The currently awards 40 to 50 Master of聽Social Work degrees per year. While the upstate operations remain聽considerably smaller than at the main campus, Chadwick said she聽recognizes the support the University provides. Three years ago,聽the Hudson Valley Center moved to a new building, increased staff聽numbers and updated technology.

鈥淲e continue to work on developing, enhancing and聽professionalizing the workforce,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he resources the聽University has given us have really been great.鈥
