F-1 students are expected to complete their academic program by the program end date listed on their Form I-20.

Need more time to complete your degree? If you cannot complete your academic program by the program end date listed on your Form I-20, you may be eligible to request a program extension through the International Services Portal.

Federal regulations permit a Designated School Official (DSO) to authorize a program extension when the student has continuously maintained valid F-1 status and the delay in completion is due to compelling academic or documented medical circumstances, as permitted by federal regulations.

You must request an extension through the International Services Portal and obtain approval from your Designated School Official (DSO) before your current Form I-20 program end date. Extensions are not automatic and are subject to eligibility requirements.

Extension Application Process

Adelphi students can request an extension of their Form I-20 if they need additional time to complete their academic program.

  1. Confirm Your Eligibility
  2. Submit Your Request (before the deadline)
  3. Provide Supporting Documentation
  4. Receive Your Updated Form I-20

Eligibility to Extend F-1 Status

To qualify for a program extension, you must:

  1. Have continuously maintained valid F-1 status through the period of enrollment.
  2. Be making normal academic progress toward completing your degree.
  3. Have a compelling academic or documented medical reason for the delay.
  4. Obtain your academic advisor鈥檚 recommendation.
  5. Provide updated financial documentation demonstrating sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses for the extension period.

Qualifying reasons may include:

  • A change in major or research topic.
  • Unexpected research difficulties or obstacles.
  • A documented medical condition.
  • Other compelling academic circumstances.

Reasons that do not qualify for program extension: Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable grounds for an extension under federal regulations. Additional coursework, repeated course failures, or a general job search do not independently qualify.

How to Apply for a Program Extension

The student must submit a request for a program extension via the at least 30-days prior to the program end date listed on their Form I-20.

Confirm that you have maintained valid F-1 status, are making normal academic progress, and have experienced a delay caused by an eligible academic or medical circumstance, such as:

  • Change of major or research topic
  • Unexpected research problems
  • Documented medical condition
  • Other Academic Reasons

Submit your program extension request through the at least two weeks before the program end date listed on your current Form I-20.

Your extension must be approved before your current program end date. Requests submitted after that date cannot be approved as program extensions.

If your program end date passes before your extension is approved, you may fall out of F-1 status. Contact the Office of International Services immediately to discuss your circumstances and possible options, including reinstatement if eligible.

Include the following with your request:

  • Your anticipated program completion date.
  • An explanation of why you need an extension.
  • Your academic advisor鈥檚 name and recommendation.
  • Updated financial documentation.
  • Supporting academic or medical documentation, as applicable.

If your request is approved, your DSO will update your program end date in SEVIS and issue an updated Form I-20. Review the document carefully to ensure all information is accurate.

Before making changes to your enrollment, employment, program, travel or immigration status, please contact International Services for guidance.
